They have stopped access to the Roswell Mill Waterfall that is located on Vickery Creek Trail in Roswell, Georgia. This Roswell staple is part of Atlanta’s Chattahoochee River National Recreation area. It is a place where many would come to relax. People enjoy a great time around and under the chilled water. Many aren’t sure exactly why access to the water has been closed. However, the area has become very popular within the last year.
I was gonna gatekeep a few places to myself. After seeing so many people disappointed in the closing, I figure I should let people know. There are many areas that you can enjoy a watering hole, or waterfall, in Georgia. Exploring Georgia’s waterfalls is a fantastic way to enjoy the natural beauty of the state, especially during the warmer months.
For those in the Atlanta area, here are five waterfalls with swimmable watering holes, perfect for a refreshing dip.
Cane Creek Falls
Distance from Atlanta: Approximately 70 miles (1 hour 20 minutes)
Description: Located in the scenic town of Dahlonega, Cane Creek Falls is a hidden gem within the grounds of Camp Glisson. The falls cascade into a wide, shallow pool surrounded by lush greenery. It’s an ideal spot for families with young children, as the water is typically calm and shallow. The area around the falls offers picnic spots and is a great place to enjoy a peaceful day out.
Panther Creek Falls
Distance from Atlanta: Approximately 85 miles (1 hour 40 minutes)
Description: Panther Creek Falls is one of Georgia’s most popular waterfall hikes, located near Clarkesville. The moderate to challenging hike is about 7 miles round trip, leading you through forested trails to a stunning multi-tiered waterfall. The pool at the base of the falls is deep and perfect for swimming, especially on hot summer days. The serene setting makes it a favorite for both hikers and nature lovers.
High Shoals Falls
Distance from Atlanta: Approximately 90 miles (1 hour 50 minutes)
Nestled in the Chattahoochee National Forest near Hiawassee, High Shoals Falls is a beautiful two-for-one experience, with two falls along the same trail. The 2.7-mile round-trip hike takes you to Blue Hole Falls first, a small, picturesque fall with a swimmable pool, and then to High Shoals Falls, where the water cascades into a larger, deeper pool. The hike is moderately difficult, but the reward of cooling off in these natural pools is well worth the effort.
Dick’s Creek Falls

Located near Dahlonega, Dick’s Creek Falls offers multiple small cascades and swimming holes along Dick’s Creek. The area is known for its serene beauty and is a popular spot for locals. Helton Creek Falls
Distance from Atlanta: Approximately 95 miles (2 hours)
Situated near Blairsville, Helton Creek Falls consists of two picturesque falls within a short, easy hike from the parking area. The lower falls have a wide pool. It’s perfect for swimming. The upper falls offer a breathtaking view of the water cascading down the rocks. The area is surrounded by lush forest, making it a peaceful retreat for a day trip from Atlanta.

Distance from Atlanta: Approximately 20 miles (35 minutes)
Even though their isn’t a waterfall at this location. This is a great area to allow yourself to enjoy nature and play in the water. With amazing walking trails and beautiful views. Sweetwater Creek State Park’s Red Trail is very popular, but not overcrowded. This trail gives you direct access to Sweetwater Creek. Many enjoy some quiet time along the rocks. Others go ahead and take a dip in the cool refreshing water. This is definitely one of my favorite spots to get some time with nature and enjoy the sounds of running water when needed.
